I watched, victorious, as his mouth curved up with a small smile, and those vulnerable eyes turned to me, ignoring what the female before him said. But we both heard her bring up the trials tomorrow in that beautiful Spring Court dialect. It sunk my spirits.

So Kaderyn quickly cut her off as he said, “Sorry, but we must be leaving.”

We stood and moved through the now-drunk festival guests to the door.

“Does Auris have celebrations?” I asked, yawning against the back of my hand as we were about to leave the large hall.

But before Kade could answer, a gruff voice called him back. “Kaderyn!”

Kade snapped all his shadows back to him, which I relinquished easily as we turned. General Mohr stood a few meters away, his hand on the hilt of his sword.

“I don’t think you realize what you’ve started, Kaderyn,” Mohr said. “I don’t think you realize just how far I’m willing to go.”

Kade’s shadowsword materialized in his hand as he hefted the massive thing up to rest on his shoulder. “Why don’t you come and try to pry her out of my fingers, General?”

Mohr’s eyes flicked pensively to the shadows that locked us tight. And if he had another minute, if just one more second lapsed, I thought it was all going to come crashing down right there.

“I expect generals to have better manners!” Lady Fede snapped as she and Lord Ohrem hurried to the standoff between Mohr and Kade. To Ohrem, she sneered, “I wonder at the strength of your army if even your general can’t control himself.”

“Mohr!” Lord Ohrem warned with a quick bark, no doubt insulted by Lady Fede’s words.

Mohr’s gaze bore into Kaderyn’s, who stood tall and defiant between us before he rolled his shoulder once and turned to trudge away. Lady Fede scurried after him as they returned to the festival.

Lord Ohrem watched them go until they were out of earshot. He looked at me once, like he was trying to figure me out, before turning to Kade. “I don’t think this is going to end how you want it to, soul Hunter,” he said.

But I couldn’t tell if it was a threat or an idle warning.

Kaderyn must not have cared how he meant it as he said, “I know how it ends, Ohrem. Or at least, I know your ending. Keep your general away from Valentina, or I’ll have my hounds rip your flesh from your bones twice a day when you’re in my halls.”

“You’re not reunited with the Hunt yet; you should do well to remember that.”

“I’m one court away from what I need, and we both know where your soul is headed once I find my way back.”

Lord Ohrem’s eyes flicked down to the shawl of feathers on his shoulders, sniffled once before jutting his shoulders out, and turned away. Something gross bubbled up in my stomach, and I wished I hadn’t had all those sweets or seen the way Lord Ohrem looked at the cloak he wore.

We returned to our room only after checking on Jair.
